Winter Fire Safety: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow Snow - TopicsExpress

Winter Fire Safety: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow Snow removal involves more than just clearing your driveway and the sidewalk. Snow accumulation or the result of plowing can completely cover or restrict access to a fire hydrant. In an emergency, every second counts. It can take firefighters three minutes to dig out a hydrant – more than the amount of time it can take for a fire to double in size. While some cities impose fines upon owners or lessees of properties that front hydrants for failure to keep them free of snow and obstruction, many do not. If you have a fire hydrant on or near your property, please take the responsibility for shoveling out and clearing the snow around it. In addition to removing snow and ice covering the hydrant itself, clear the area three feet around the hydrant for easier access and a shoveled path from the street or driveway. Consider helping the elderly or those with medical conditions keep their fire hydrants clear as well. Taking the time after each snowfall can save precious minutes in case of a fire. The house, or life, you save may be your own.
