Winter Storm Update Low pressure will gather strength in the Gulf of Mexico today and churn toward the Southeast before heading up the eastern side of the mountains, bringing heavy coastal city rain, strong winds to western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and eastern Ohio, and moderate snowfalls from western Pennsylvania/New York to eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia. I expect wet snow to develop midday Tuesday, with temperatures in the mid-30s, allowing for initial melting on paved surfaces, but accumulating snow could become a problem in the afternoon and make Tuesday evening rush hour challenging. Snow amounts at this point would appear to range from 1” at Dayton to 4” at Mansfield, and locally 2-3” are possible in Central Ohio through Tuesday night, depending on the exact storm path. Southeastern Ohio will have a period of rain before changing to snow, limiting accumulations from Portsmouth to Athens and Marietta to a slushy few inches, but in the latter phase of the storm Tuesday night. Travel will become increasingly marginal, especially after dark Tuesday, due to falling temperatures, and also to our east/northeast, where snowfall rates will be moderate closer to the storm path. Blustery northerly winds and periodic snow showers will persist Wednesday, as the storm cranks up along the I-95 corridor and dumps 2 inches of rain on the major metropolitan areas from Atlanta to Richmond to D.C., Philadelphia and New York City, all the way to Boston. Heavy air travel delays are a certainty at Eastern airports, and extending west to Ohio and the Midwest as things back up. Temperatures will dip below freezing later Tuesday and remain subfreezing in most areas through Thanksgiving Day, before milder weather returns by the weekend. The storm track can certainly shift a little this far ahead of an event, which would alter snow totals, so we’ll have further updates to come!
