Winters were seasons to sit on our charpais in the sun, reading or knitting or munching on guavas, aaloo or gobhi or mooli parathas and rai ke achar- carrots, beans and cauliflower pickled in mustard. A very convenient article of furniture, portable and hardy. The Brits called them charpoys and in local usage they were called khatiyas. The knitters of khatiyas were specialists and their weaves, designs and the tight ardavans that fixed it all in place are things of the vanished age of small-town leisure. Here is the khatiya-binao mans familiar cry. Do you remember? MerryChristmas.
