With Henry Tribble in the Calder Theatrical Bookshop in The Cut, opposite the Young Vic. Just wandering past and I got excited by the second-hand books on the bench outside. Woo hoo! Wittgenstein! Look up to see shopkeeper waving at us through the window and saying come on in. So we do. After a bit of chat I comment that Black Books is one of our favourite comedies, and he says thats not a comedy, its a documentary. A portrait to the life, he says, of the previous owner. He resolved, when taking over, to do the opposite of what they did. Take as much time as you like he says. Were open till 9. It really is a great shop, half theatre half politics. Does what good bookshops do, that is select the books that they hope youll find interesting. Widens the mind.
