With a new season in Costa Rica only days away, it was time to bring in the trail cameras that I have had set-up in various locations around my home. I have spent a lot of time in the last few months learning how to identify animal tracks and have logged many hours following them through the snow. Many interesting stories are told by the tracks of animals that we rarely get to see, and following them can be extremely exciting and informative, literally bringing you into the life of another creature. Of the many species I tracked, I became most interested in the playful meanderings of the river otter, a species I have seen only once despite a lifetime in the forest. It took three months of careful observations to learn where I might put a camera to get a glimpse at an otter, they can cover an incredible amount of land for a creature that stands only a few inches above the ground! So when I checked the camera today I was happy to see that the work finally paid off. I hope to see this guy again when I return in the spring and wish him (or her) all the best through a harsh Canadian winter. #riverotter #animals #trailcamera #otter #otters
