With all this talk of schism taking place within the United Methodist Church we must remember something very important. The house of God is not simply items and assets that can be split up and the profits sold after a divorce. When we chose to simply write off portions of our church who seek to dialogue over these topics, or who themselves have no strong opinion either way we are hurting people. These things that get divided up in a divorce are not simply items in the UMC. If a schism takes place we will be hurting actual physical human beings in whom Christ resides. The focal part of the house of God is table where all gather for a meal, and yes we might not get along with all of our family all of the time. Yet this does not mean we simply write them off as no longer in the family. It is not up to us to decide who is in the family of God, for the family of God is one that open to all who wish to join it. As I took communion this past Sunday the thought that brought tears to my eyes was that somewhere someone might be feeling unwelcome at the table that has been set by the lord because someone else at the table was attempting to decide who was allowed to partake. So please remember that whether here online, or out in the wider world when we discuss a schism taking place we are not simply talking about agenda items, possessions, and who gets what; but that we are truly discussing people, and a person is simply not something that can be divided like a worldly good for all persons are themselves Christ.
