With multiple shooters on the loose in the Galilee Baptist Church shooting, lets analyze how Police Director Ralph Rivera, Jr. is doing since he received his Kryptonian shield on April 4, 2012 from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, to run our Trenton Police Department into the ground. For some perspective, consider this: There were 24 homicides in 2012, 37 in 2013 and 10 so far this year. Two cops were shot: Jimmy Letts and Edgar Rios. The proactive component of the force was sandbagged by Mr. Rivera and then revived only after pressure from the community and local officials made defying the will of the people untenable. There are 54 pending grievances filed against Mr. Rivera and five charges of unfair labor practices. Capt. Paul Messina, who has embarrassed the Trenton PD and our city by sleeping on the job and wrecking a city-owned vehicle, is a staunch believer in intelligence-driven police strategies. However, this approach, which recognizes, examines, and manages risks, was not applied to the Galilee Baptist Church shooting nightmare, where several people were critically injured. If it were, police officers would have been assigned to the funeral to ensure the safety of those in attendance. So much for paying attention to the policing needs of our community. Trentonians need a new dynamic that drives a zero-tolerance approach to fighting crime in New Jerseys capital city.
