With racing costs soaring out of control and car owners outspending each other to win... are three National tours really what is best for DLM racing? While others contend that regional series are killing the sport and cutting down car counts at events... I CONTEND THEY WILL SAVE DLM RACING. DLM racing needs to get away from national travelling series, their tow money and their higher paying purses. The structure supports creation of these race teams that attempt to outspend one another (see Rowland Racing press release) all in the name of conquering the series and winning a national championship. Look at the money spent to win a WoO and Lucas championship... do the race teams REALLY make money at the end of the year even with the big checks? Racers like Scott Bloomquist complain about the cost of racing and the need for higher paying purses... yet run a chassis business that charges outrageous sums for its race cars and consulting. That same builder then pushes certain shocks or motor packages that cost more than the norm all in the name of a kick back to his racing program from the manufacturer. You CANNOT continue to talk out of both sides of your mouth... you are one of the prime contributors to the escalating costs in the sport. What DLM racing needs are MORE strong regional shows paying modest purses ($3,000 to $5,000 to win). This will keep drivers regionally, pay better than a weekly show and promote more DLM cars to enter the sport. The purse structure for the event needs to stop being so top heavy and pay more throughout the field with the goal that the last place car gets 10%+ of the winners purse. With less purse and sanction cost to the track/promoter... more of these regional races can be held, more money for ALL racers even with modest budgets, and hopefully you will see more cars in DLM racing. Rather than a points fund at the end of a season, give away product (new race seat, set of shocks, etc) and put the money normally saved for year end checks and put it back into the nightly purse. Again, you wont get rich running these tours but the key part... you wont go completely broke running these tours as the pay well through the entire starting field. The biggest thing... this type of program wont incent car owners spending huge sums on a race team in an attempt to win a national championship, leverage tow money, etc. With less to win and the high cost of fuel, it will demotivate these super teams from forming and level out the playing field in terms of what is being spent in racing. If we keep the current trend going... we will end up with only one national touring series anyway and the only race teams able to afford racing will be the teams with car owners with deep pockets. Basically we will have what the WoO Sprint cars have today as they have gone down this same path. With costs the way they are now, we are killing the independent racer from being able to compete (see Brian Birkhofer Racing Fans post).
