"With regards to the 50,000 unique viewers and $50,000 performance bond, as stipulated in the new MDA licensing guidelines, it is the result of some very intense number crunching. The first is not difficult to arrive at. There are 3,258,100 Singapore citizens as recorded in the 2012 census, according to the Department of Statistics Singapore. If 50K people shared a piece of online news with 3 people each, that piece of news becomes consumed by another 150K. If this second set of 150K viewers share it with another 3 people each, it becomes 450K. The next iteration goes to 1.35 million. In just 4 iterations, you get a grand total of 2 million viewers. That’s way past half the population and we are only talking about just the Internet medium alone, not verbal. All this just means that you can achieve widespread dissemination in the shortest possible time frame. There are better number crunching experts out there, who probably can figure out exactly how much and how fast. In the social media business world, it’s called viral marketing. That’s pretty intimidating if you are trying to control information. The second figure of 50K, pertaining to the performance bond, is also not an arbitrary figure. I am not privy to the process of how this figure was arrived at, but we can be certain as well again, that loads of data went into the formulation. I hesitate to say exactly what and it’s for the government to explain it, if it wishes to. It’s not a matter for us to speculate because speculation fuels suspicion. Suspicion leads nowhere except to cynicism, something we hope to keep to a minimum."
