With spring training and exhibition games already well underway it sure is looking like Scott Boras is going to have less money in his counting house with Steven Drew still twisting in the wind. Me thinks it was a huge mistake to have turned down the Sox qualifying offer of 14.1 million for the year. Sure Drew is looking for a long term deal and you can’t blame him for wanting security, but this is looking like a classic over estimation of the market for his skills. Boras is to blame on this one. He’s not going to get a contract for that kind of money on a long term contract and Drew is likely to take less to play the role of a utility player. Teams are not willing to give up a draft pick for Drew and he could end up waiting until June to sign on where the team rolling the dice wouldn’t have to give up that pick. Worst case scenario has him standing on the outside looking in as the season wears on and someone goes down and that team gets desperate. Boras may loose more than money on this…he could lose face and future clients as well. Not crying any tears for Boras, but Drew deserves better. So far a lose_lose situation for both parties. Should have taken the 14.1 for the 2014 season...bet Drew feels that way now too.
