With the blue plastic specks in Crest, triclosan in Colgate, and - TopicsExpress

With the blue plastic specks in Crest, triclosan in Colgate, and concerns over SLS, people have started looking for alternatives to the major brands of toothpaste. One of those alternatives that I have been introduced to by Lory Laughter, a fellow dental hygienist and columnist for RDH Magazine, is Livionex Dental Gel. We all know the real secret to effective teeth brushing is the mechanical removal of biofilm. Contrary to what some believe, triclosan doesn’t actually break through bacterial biofilm. What if there was a type of toothpaste that contained no abrasives, no detergents, and no antimicrobials, but was actually able to break through bacterial biofilm? This is where Livionex comes in. Developed by Stanford and Berkeley grads, Livionex claims they are able to penetrate and disrupt oral biofilm (plaque), which leads to dramatic reductions in gingival inflammation, bleeding and pocket depths. While they have peer reviewed published research backing up the numbers, these are some very bold claims, so I decided to check things out for myself. Although, not a scientific study in terms of having a statistically significant sample size or controls in place, I am amazed at the results I saw with a patient over a 10 day period. On August 24, 2014, I probed the pocket depths of a healthy 33 year old patient who had mild gingivitis with pseudopocketing. After recording the pocket depths, this patient began using Livionex twice a day and flossed at least 3 days per week. After 10 days, on September 3, 2014, I again recorded the pocket depths, and was amazed at the improvement over such a short period of time. Again, this was an informal experiment on one patient, so it can’t be taken as a scientific study, but the anecdotal evidence has me convinced there is truth to Livionex’s science. You can see the perio chart in the pictures attached to this post. Beyond using Livionex Dental Gel as toothpaste, you can also use it to polish patients with crowns because there are no abrasives. You can also use it to polish SRP patients because there are no abrasives or pumice to lodge subgingivally during healing. The anti-inflammatory nature of Livionex also helps speed up the healing process for SRP patients. I encourage you to look into Livionex yourself. It is definitely a premium product, but as a dental professional you can register with Livionex on their website and get your first tube for $5. Head over now to livionexdental. Have you used Livionex before? What has your experience been?
