With the death of James Gandolfini at only 51 years old, I am reminded once again of the fragility and preciousness of life. That every day I have to be thankful to be surrounded by people who love me and whom I love and to enjoy them while I can. I am also reminded that the richness of your life lies almost exclusively with the quality of the people with whom you surround yourself. If I have learned nothing else in this life I have come to know that no matter how accomplished and strong you are or how hard you try, you cannot save someone who is self-destructive from themselves and when someone is, for whatever reason, perpetually unhappy they can and will destroy your serenity and drag you down into their personal hell far more quickly and easily than you can ever hope to lift them up. The smoldering embers of negativity, anger, hate, revenge, jealousy; all of these are the very essence of evil and anyone who remains too close for too long risks eventually being tainted by the smoke if not consumed entirely by the same flame and it is incredible how long it can take to get the stench of it out of the fabric of your life.
