With the inquest into the CBSA in-custody death of Lucia coming up - TopicsExpress

With the inquest into the CBSA in-custody death of Lucia coming up next week, we will be seeing all kinds of proposed solutions to make the migrant detention system more humane. Like the absurd Toronto Star editorial this morning stating that But what if instead of being locked up for almost three weeks — and isolated from support systems in a facility that can deny contact even with lawyers, critics say — she had been set free and monitored electronically? Electronic monitoring of failed refugee claimants and immigrants is clearly a much more humane way of keeping track of individuals than locking them up for days, weeks, months – even years – at a time. Beware of wolves in sheeps clothing. Electronic surveillance is a gross violation of privacy, continues to mark racialized people as undesirable outsiders, and does nothing to change the underlying logic of migrants as people to be suspicious of and hence managed/controlled/disposed of. The only acceptable alternative to arbitrary, indefinite detention without charge is freedom.
