With the shopping season quickly approaching, LPD would like to provide our community members with some tips to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of theft. Please remember to secure your vehicles and do not leave any items visible in order to avoid vehicle burglaries. Items commonly left visible in vehicles that lead to burglaries have been backpacks, purses, laptops, cellphones, multiple shopping bags, and wrapped gifts. Suspects generally do quick checks/peeks through vehicle windows when determining which vehicle to break into. We suggest the following habits when going to a shopping area or parking lot to thwart would be thieves: 1) Store items in the trunks of vehicles 2) If items cannot be stored in the trunk, keep them out of view by covering them with a jacket or blanket or securing them under a seat. 3) Pay attention to where you park, and be aware if anyone is sitting in their vehicles in the parking lot near your parking space. They may be watching to see what is placed in your vehicle. 4) If you return to your vehicle to place shopping bags in it, and plan on continuing your shopping, be sure to store those items out of sight and to lock your vehicle. While shopping, we suggest that community members maintain tight control of their belongings and be aware of their surroundings. While shopping, some community members have recently been the victims of theft by: 1) Placing their purse or personal bag down while looking at items and sometimes even walking away from their purse to another display. 2) Placing their wallet or credit/debit card on the counter for the store employee before they are ready to take it. 3) Placing their cell phone or car keys on the counter while paying for items. 4) Leaving purses or personal bags open / unzipped, allowing suspects to take see or take items out of purse. 5) Placing other shopping bags down and unattended while paying for new items. If while shopping you see suspicious activities, or persons, please contact LPD Dispatch at (925)371-4987. If you are shopping at the Premium Outlets, you can also contact their security staff at (925) 918-7903.
