With the snow storm a day away, Im going to break down what we can - TopicsExpress

With the snow storm a day away, Im going to break down what we can expect from this complex storm... This storm is a low pressure system coming up from the South-Southwest with moisture being fed in from the Gulf of Mexico. So we can expect a lot of moisture from this system. The problem we will be running into is where the freezing line will be, because that will determine how much snow, mixed precip, freezing rain, or rain an area may get. For Northern Illinois, we will be starting out with snow, but as the warm moist warm works its way North, we will transition over to mixed precip; Rain and snow. With ground and surface temperatures being below freezing from the past few days, we have an increased risk for icing. Ice accumulations could be in the 0.10-0.15 range for Northern Illinois. We will then get a break in the weather, with some fog possible, before the cold air wraps around the back end. When this happens, this is when we will get the bulk of our snow in Northern Illinois. Snow totals will be in the 1-3 range. Locally higher totals far Northwest Illinois. The line between snow and mixed precip when we change back over to snow will be along the Havard - Southern Winnebago County Line - Freeport to the Southwest. If you are traveling, higher snow amounts in northeast Iowa and Southwest Wisconsin into the Madison area. Central Illinois can expect to see a mixed precipitation for most of the day tomorrow, with some areas even seeing freezing rain. There is an increased risk for icing in this area before you transition over to rain. Then with the cold air wrapping on the back side, a mixed precip is likely again. Little to no snow is expected for you here. Southern Illinois is expected to get freezing rain and rain for most the day. Initially icing will be an issue, but once you change over to rain that issue should diminish.
