With the temperatures rising and summer approaching, it is once again time for OPEA elections. According to the OPEA Bylaws, the Association elects a president every two years. In addition, members in Regions 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and Retiree East will also be electing Directors. Each region has one Director, with the exception of Region 6, which has two positions because of the number of members in the region. The term of office for the President and Directors elected in August will be January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2016. Candidates for President must have been an OPEA member for one year. In addition, the candidate cannot have been a member of a competing organization for four years. Competing organizations are defined by the OPEA Board of Directors as the Communications Workers of America/Oklahoma State Workers Union and Oklahoma Corrections Professionals. The even numbered and the Retiree East positions for the OPEA Board of Directors will also be elected this year. The election for these position will run concurrent with the presidential election. In order to run for Director in the even numbered regions, the candidate must be an active state employee member. To run for Retiree East Director, the candidate must be a retired member. Candidates must live in the region’s boundaries and have been an OPEA member for one year. Members who changed their membership to their work location during the option period in 2011 or 2013 may run in the region corresponding to their worksite. In addition, the candidate cannot have been a member of a competing organization for two years. The filing period for all offices is May 29 through June 12 at 5:00 p.m.. Ballots will be mailed to OPEA members July 28. All votes must be placed by August 14 at 5:00 p.m. Once again, VR Election Services will run the election, with phone and internet balloting available to participants. The OPEA Board of Directors meets approximately eight times throughout the year on Saturday with an occasional addition of Friday evening. The OPEA Board also attends and takes a leadership role at events such as OPEA Day at the Capitol and Convention. In addition, OPEA Directors are responsible for leading the regional council in their area. For more information see the election rules and filing form by clicking here.
