Without my computer today, I borrowed Lances part of the day, and then spent most of rest of the day harvesting cucumbers, eggplant, peppers/chilis, tomatoes, zucchini, basil, and pumpkins. Then I potted up a big white eggplant, a huge Roma tomato vine, various peppers and chilis (including some habeneros which have yet to ripen), and big pots of basil and Thai basil, and put them in the barn to try to extend the season just a bit longer. Id pot up more tomatoes, but dont have really the space. Tomorrow, well have to pull up the elephant ears, and some of the other tender ornamentals in the ground... harvest what else is tender out there [well leave the root crops, brassicas and arugula], pick all the zinnias and then get back to insulating the rest of the west wing of the barn. There are still apples and Asian pears to harvest... some of the pears actually ferment — not rot — on the tree. Their skin turns black, but their flesh is almost liquified. The miniature donkey next door loves them, and has grown to love me. He goes through this little hyperventilation/asthmatic attack whenever I get near the fence. I like him better than the snobby miniature ponies who always try to push him away. He is so gentle — he would never bite my fingers no matter how eager he is (unlike the goats). I love that little donkey too. Lance says he loves me because hes a miniature donkey and Im like a mini-me Jesus... which is something of a stretch but Ill go with it.
