Wollongong Police are currently investigating a number of incidents involving the theft of handbags from motor vehicles and trolleys in shopping centre car parks across the Command. In majority of these incidents the victim has returned to the car park with their shopping and placed their handbag on the front seat of their vehicle, when they have been approached by a male person who has opened the unlocked passenger door and removed the handbag before leaving the scene. One male offender has been described as, about 40 years old, 160cm tall, Caucasian with a shaved head. Police are making further enquiries in relation to a possible suspect, however if anyone has any information in relation to these incidents, please call Wollongong Police on 42267899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. We are encouraging people to be vigilant when out and about doing their shopping. Always lock the doors and avoid leaving valuables on the front seat, particularly handbags. Police are also advising shoppers to not leave their bags in shopping trolleys or on the front seat while they unload their shopping into the boot as this can create opportunities for thieves.
