Wonderful Advice from this woman.. Who runs the Waystation.. Cyn Mobley 4 mins · Saving money when you have a lot of dogs Just a few months ago, we were talking about ways to save money and one fellow was very appreciative -- then commented, Gee, I sure wish there was a way to save money on heartworm protection. After a few chuckles and bemused silences, a lot of us chimed in with a few suggestions. And pictures. We were about to make his day and it was a very gratifying feeling. He was stunned. And very appreciative. So -- maybe there are some of you who dont have these tricks in your rescuer bag. Its my policy to NOT GIVE doses because 1. I am NOT prescribing biologics or chemicals for a given condition or prevention, and 2. you should do this in conjunction with veterinary advice and monitoring and 3. if youre going to do a few of these things instead of using commercial products, then you need to make your own decisions for your own dogs. Google is your friend. Im just giving you a place to get started doing your own research. Oh, and if you are allergic to peanuts -- dont do the stuff below with peanut butter because if you do, youre an idiot and too stupid to do any of the rest of it. Youll notice that giving your own shots is not on this list. Thats because I dont have faith in how the vials or syringes are handled at a local farm store. I DO give five way, lepto, kennel cough and dog flu vaccines, but I order my stuff direct from manufacturer and I KNOW its been refrigerated correctly. Besides, you have to go in anyway for rabies and you probably dont see your vet as often as I see mine. Sooooo, in no particular order: 1. A $38 bottle of ivermect from the local farm store will last you for years for HW protection. Google for doses and branding info. 2. If you dont want to run to the vet for Panacur and you know thats what you need, Safeguard Goat Dewormer is the same stuff. 3. Instead of buying pill pockets, make your own by mixing equal parts of peanut butter and flour, adding a bit more ofwhatever is required to give it the appropriately tacky but not sticky texture. 4. Termidor, the stuff that the pest guys use against termites, is Fipronil aka Frontline. Google to find out how hunters use it on their dogs. ITs the SAME STUFF, slightly LESS CONCENTRATED, and there are various techniques for using it. Youre welcome. And dont forget about the peanut allergy caveat. Cyn
