Wondering about things during Spiritual Time: In our statewide newspaper today, the Director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission explains how we must use taxpayer dollars to bri ... uh … entice private companies to locate in the state. We must subsidize them, I suppose because all the other states do it. It’s what my mother called the “If the other kids were all jumping off a cliff … situation.” I guess we do. I just wish we would call it by its real name: WELFARE. Why is it only welfare when the benefits go to the poorest (what Jesus called “the least”) of those among us? And why is it that we can punish a person who cheats or lies to receive AFDC payments, perhaps making them pay the money back, but we have no recourse whatsoever if “enticed” businesses fail to live up to the agreement?
