Wondering what to expect tonight at World Premiere? Check out the program notes for Adam Schoenbergs Canto from our program note writer, Lindsay Koob! Canto – this evening’s newly commissioned work by rising American composer Adam Schoenberg – is a highly personal work, arising from his joyful wonderment at being a relatively new father. The piece is inspired by – and dedicated to – his wife, Janine (from Peru) and Luca, his eight-month-old son. I haven’t yet heard Canto (Spanish for “song”), but was fortunate enough to discuss it with the composer. Adam described the piece as a gently atmospheric lullaby, as he kept the image of his slumbering baby boy in mind while writing it. The work begins in an “ambiguously tonal” manner, flirting with vague dissonance and chromaticism as it first unfolds. But, as it progresses, the continuously chant-like and lyrical melody line predominates, ending the piece with senses of unalloyed, softly ecstatic beauty and personal fulfillment. Adam will tell you more about it from the stage. Tickets: $20-70, students $11 available from the Singletary Center for the Arts at 257-4929 and at the doors
