***Woodcutting day update*** Today was a wood cutting day. We started off to bring in at least a cord. I was ready with a pocket full of shotgun shells on the left and a pocket knife and earplugs in the pocket on the right. I slung the shot gun over my back (were in grizzly country) and the eight pound mall and double sided ax on the left shoulder and a big cup of coffee in the right hand. Hubby carried the tool bag with gas mix and oil for the chain saw, tools and files and the chain saw. We started off to make short work of three fallen trees with our dog Peanut, a little white fluff ball, and a clouder of cats trailing behind us. We hiked out about an eighth of a mile to the trees and sat down to take a rest when we saw our two Buff Orpington chickens arriving at our little wood cutting site. They love the bugs that come out of the wood. It was something to see! We were able to chunk up 2 of the trees and split the wood before lunch with hubby weilding the chain saw most of the time and me splitting the chunks with the eight pound mall and the smaller ones with the ax. After a short lunch break for reheated spaghetti at home we were back at it. We made short work of the last tree, cleared branches from a path through the meadow backed the truck up to the piles. We tossed it in the truck until it was over-flowing. We took it home, tossed it and went back for the second load. In six hours we brought in what we like to call a Bethel cord. Thats two truck loads full. Not bad for a days work. The dog and the cats and the chickens had fun. And, were that much closer to having enough wood to make it through the winter. Im gonna sleep like a baby tonight! :)
