Woodside, Middle School Updates: 7th & 8th Grade Math The 7th graders are learning how to add and subtract like fractions, unlike fractions, and mixed numbers. The students are playing various games to help them learn all they need to know about working with fractions. They are also writing their own word problems to demonstrate how fractions are used in real-world situations. Next, the students will be learning how to multiply and divide fractions. The 8th graders are learning how to translate verbal expressions into algebraic equations. The students are creating “Mystery Bags” that are filled with certain items. After writing clues about the number of items in the bag, the students will write equations using variables and numbers. They will use the equations to determine the number of items in each bag. The 8th graders are also continuing to practice their multiplication and division facts. 7th & 8th Grade ELA In seventh grade English class, the students are reading the short story “The Good Samaritan,” by Rene Saldana, Jr. This fictional story centers on a young man named Rey. Rey and his friends are duped into helping a fellow neighbor with strenuous yard work, only to find they will not be compensated for their efforts. Working through his anger, Rey slowly begins to understand that sometimes helping others is a reward in itself. While reading, students will share personal experiences regarding instances in which they may have helped others and identify ways in which they may continue to be “Good Samaritans”. In eighth grade English class, the students have been focusing on an article from Time Magazine entitled Coming to America. The article centers around the lives of three immigrants who came to America in hopes of a better life. Using prior knowledge from social studies, students have been taking part in meaningful discussions concerning the difficulties many immigrants face when they leave their homes to achieve the “American dream.” Students will have the opportunity to share their ancestors’ immigration stories with their peers and practice their writing skills. 7th Grade Reading & Writing The students have returned from holiday break and are well rested and ready to learn. The students started a new unit in Read 180. They are learning about severe weather and the damage that it can cause to people, places, and things. The students have learned about a young man that was struck by lightning and about a forest fire in Colorado. They are doing a fantastic job with this unit!
