Woodside, Middle School Updates: Homeroom 1 In ELA, Homeroom 1 just finished reading The Diary of Anne Frank where they experienced a difficult period in history through the words in Anne Frank’s personal journal. In Science, the students are finishing up their unit on Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. For part of their unit on the Civil Rights Movement in Social Studies, the students are discussing the four ways of protesting “peacefully”: freedom rides, boycotts, marches and sit-ins. Lastly, with summer vacation almost upon us, Homeroom 1 has been working on a vacation planning project in life skills with a $4500.00 budget. The students are determining how to spend this money wisely in order to have an enjoyable vacation. 8th Grade Social Studies The 8th grade classes finished their discussion about the Civil Rights Movement. They discussed events like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the integration of public schools, and the March on Washington. The students also discussed influential leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Thurgood Marshall. The next discussion will consist of various issues that Americans faced during the Cold War, like the Cuban Missile Crisis and the threat of Communism in America. Health and Physical Education The 8th grade is spending their final week of the school year learning about bicycle and water safety in Health class. Many of the students will be participating in these activities during the summer and we want to ensure that they do so safely. During physical education class, the will be working on improving their bumping and serving skills by playing volleyball. They really enjoy it when their teachers join in the game too! We hope everyone has a safe summer and enjoys their Fourth of July!!! 7th and 8th Grade Science The 7th grade students are completing a unit on plants. The students have looked at the adaptations and various special functions of plants and their organ systems. The students also learned about the unique life cycle of pine trees and the purpose of pinecones in pine tree reproduction. The 8th graders are completing a unit on forces and motion. The students were introduced to all three of Isaac Newton’s laws of motion. The teacher used different objects to demonstrate how the laws can be applied to real life. They then came up with definitions of their own in order to explain the laws in simpler terms.
