Words. The words mean what they say. Until they don’t. When we disagree on what a word means we talk past each other. When we talk past each other and we’re not invested in a word’s meaning we tend to talk until we communicate. When we talk past each other and we are invested in a word’s meaning we tend toward offense at meanings other than our own. Want to instigate a schism? Get some church people together to compare definitions and applications of Religion, Christian, Evangelism, Disciple, Success, Worship, Leadership, Excellence, Stewardship, Judgment. Yeah, not for the faint of heart. You’d think we’d catch our breath, get into God’s presence and ask Holy Spirit to define them for us. But no, too often we cling to our own definitions and agree to disagree—as if that reconciles anything. Worse, we can arrive at a point where we would rather abandon the words than use them. Where the flesh and the enemy have disfigured and counterfeited our opportunity is to redeem. Not ignore. Not abandon. Redeem.
