Words from Todays Newspaper: Word#2 of the day: PLEBISCITE In 2003, military ruler General Pervez Musharraf famously dropped Pakistan’s calls for a plebiscite in Kashmir. [The sentence given above has been taken from todays newspaper (dated: Jan 21, 2014)]. Plebiscite refers to a vote by which the people of a country or region express their opinion for or against an important proposal. It derives from the Latin word pleb, meaning common people. Referendum is a common synonym of the word. Another word derived from the same root is plebeian, which means typically of someone from a low social class. For example, “her plebeian tastes made her the butt of all jokes in the country club.” Plebe, a noun and yet another word from the same root pleb, refers to a freshman at a military or naval academy.
