Words of Luke--- Then the commander [of the Roman troops in Jerusalem] went to Paul and arrested him. He told his soldiers to tie Paul with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done wrong. Some in the crowd shouted one thing, others shouted something else. Because of the commotion, he couldnt learn the truth, so he ordered that Paul be taken to the military headquarters. When Paul reached the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers in order to protect him from the violence of the crowd. The whole mob was following them, shouting, Kill him! As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the officer, May I say something to you? The officer replied to Paul, You speak Greek, do you? Arent you the Egyptian who turned some of our people against their leaders? Didnt you lead 4,000 terrorists [assassins] out into the desert some time ago? Paul replied, Im a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of an important city. Please, let me speak to the people. The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language, Aramaic/[or Hebrew]... Acts 21:33-40
