Words of wisdom from Dr. Joe: I hate writing in cliché` so I’ll spare you the rah-rah speech intended to help you ward off your favorite aunt’s peanut butter Buckeyes or grandma’s famous pecan pie. I’m going to eat them and I hope you do too! I’m not even going to use the word “moderation” here—it sounds so boring. Who wants to be moderate? It’s about making a choice. I choose to not gain weight or I choose to not care. It’s as simple as that. If you choose to not gain weight—and I mean REALLY make that choice—you’ll prioritize your food selections. Maybe pick just the best dessert or pick two or three to share with your spouse. Instead of eating a full serving of every starch source, eat just a taste of each or skip some entirely. I mean, will this be the last time you can ever eat mashed potatoes? I’d rather have the gooey sweet potatoes swimming in that magical brown sugar syrupy stuff! Your lame brother-in-law brought rolls he popped out of a can and baked for 12 minutes and you’re going to waste calories on them? No way! Everything you eat above what your body needs in those next couple of hours will be converted to stored energy….fat. What foods are worth it and how much can you eat and stay consistent with your goal? You’re the one who said, “I choose not to gain weight.” Remind yourself of that when you take your place in the holiday food lines.
