Work has started on the $100 million Upgrading and Expansion of the Tamale Airport into an International Airport. To be completed next year, the new airport is expected, among others, to help reduce air traffic to and from the Kotoka International Airport. The start of the project is in fulfillment of a 2008 Campaign Promise by the late, President John Evans Atta Mills in Tamale. Before breaking the ground for the start of the project, President John Mahama said the upgrading of the Tamale airport will boost commercial farming and exports from the Northern parts of the country and also enhance tourism arrivals, among others. The first phase of the project comprises the extension of the runway to 3,940 meters and expanded to accommodate wide bodied aircrafts and installation of a complete lighting system.
