Work on the deepest hole ever drilled had to be stopped because the temperature reached 356F! The Kola Superdeep Borehole was a super hole drilled by Soviet scientists in the Soviet Union on the Kola Peninsula, hence the name. The project’s purpose was to see how deep they could drill into the Earth’s crust. They began drilling on May 24 of 1970 using the Uralmash-4E and then the Uralmash-1500 series drilling rig. They drilled a hole and then drilled several holes branching off from the main one. The SG-3 was the deepest hole from the branches drilled reaching 40,230 feet. To this day it is the deepest artificial point on Earth. The SG-3 was completed in 1989. They had to stop drilling, because the SG-3 hole became much too hot for the equipment to handle. The Earth’s crust radiated 356 degrees Fahrenheit at the 40,230 foot depth. The project was officially shut down in 2005 due to lack of funding. Everything from the site was scrapped and the site has been abandoned since 2008.
