Work stress a silent killer A recent survey conducted in - TopicsExpress

Work stress a silent killer A recent survey conducted in #Beijing showed that many Chinese white-collar #employees are required to #work more than the legally mandated 40-hour workweek. The survey found that people between 31 to 50 years of age are working the most overtime, with nearly 90 percent of them saying that they work more than 40 hours a week. The survey has only added to the discussion on the ill effects of work-related stress in the country, particularly after a 2013 report by the China Youth Daily estimated that job #stress contributes to the death of nearly 600,000 Chinese each year. Under Chinese law, standard working hours are 40 hours per week. #Overtime is limited to another 36 hours per month. But legal protections alone are not enough to ensure workers’ mental safety. Considering the fast pace of development that the country has been witnessing, there are increased social pressures on people to work longer and earn more. Experts, therefore, argue that the problem needs a legal solution along with social one, with people being encouraged to build a work-life balance.
