Working as a trainer at a gym vs. independently has taught me a - TopicsExpress

Working as a trainer at a gym vs. independently has taught me a lot in a very short period of time. In the past, people who were relatively active would ask for help with training, and these people were already relatively active in one way or another. But at a big gym, we have people walking in who have never lifted a weight in their lives, who have desk jobs, a family, and a life that has not allowed them to be active in any way. Being so absorbed in the fitness community, this seemed bizarre at first, but now I realize that a giant majority of people have no idea what they would do at the gym, or where to even start to get more active or in shape. There are people who will have trouble reaching up over their heads for 10 reps, who have trouble standing up out of bed, or climbing into their shower. This is insane. People struggle with normal daily functions that we take for granted. Not just some people, but a MAJORITY. Take a look around you. How do your parents move? Do they have chronic back or shoulder pain? Do they realize most of their pains can be mended by becoming more active and resistance training? This may be counter-intuitive for some, but these are the facts. Taking 10 minute walks wont cut it, it is an okay start, but you need weight training to build and maintain muscle as you get older. If you dont know where to start, ask for help. Theres plenty of people out there who are more than willing to share their time, experience, and knowledge.
