Working out the details for the Mari Lwyd Toy Theatre Drop Curtain, so called because it descends rather than opens and closes horizontally like the curtains of a window. The Mari Lwyd… a mid-winter mumming tradition in rural Wales… was a hobbyhorse of the mast tradition, made of a horses skull on a tall pole carried by a man hidden beneath a white sheet. As such its a bipedal beast, though in my work it occasionally appears as a cadaverous quadruped. For the toy theatre, the Maris sheet/shroud doubles for the drop-curtain, billowing to partially reveal the Mari peering out from behind it. The sketches here show a detail of the cloth, and the proscenium aperture.
