Working with the Chief Karen Ogen and the team at Wetsuweten First Nation over the past year has changed my life. During this time my eyes have been opened to a version of Canadian history that was never taught in school. The things I have learned still bring me to tears and choke me with rage. Yet in the face of such crushing and systemic adversity, there is a rising tide of joyful and compassionate warriors who will neither settle for trinkets nor be calmed by platitudes. Their unfathomable love and warmth fuels a fierce commitment to healing the wounds of the past and protecting the future. I am so very thankful for being given the opportunity to work alongside such inspiring human beings each day. And while there is a long road ahead for us all, I do believe that its a hopeful journey - one that is already causing me to renegotiate my understanding of forgiveness, urgency and pride.
