Workout Wednesday! This week our post comes from Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centres trainer Nuri Bonada: Post Workout Recovery You have trained hard doing your cardiovascular or weight lifting training. You have done your flexibility exercises to recover your hard trained muscles but there is something else you have to take care of and it’s called “Nutrition after the Workout”. When you workout you can use up all your stored glycogen, easily sweat over two liters of water, and break down both muscle and red blood cells. The benefits of good nutrition after workouts are: • Replenishing the muscle and liver glycogen stores • Consuming protein to assist with muscle repair • Restoring fluid and electrolytes lost in sweat • Supporting the immune system to handle the damage To get the best benefits, your body will need proteins and carbohydrates. For example: Proteins: chicken breast, turkey, eggs, protein shake. Carbohydrates: sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa (good source of protein too) And if you are on the run a peanut butter and honey sandwich on rye bread is the best solution. Last but not least “do not forget to drink a lot of water”.
