Workshop: Delhi, The Invisible City New Delhi is a master-planned - TopicsExpress

Workshop: Delhi, The Invisible City New Delhi is a master-planned capital city. Its unplanned spaces such as Urban Villages, Extended Abadi areas, Unauthorized Colonies and JJ Clusters tend to be seen as the margins of the planned city. Yet a majority of citizens live and work in these unplanned areas of the city. We term these spaces "the invisible city" because architects, planners and social scientists rarely find out how these spaces function. For millions of Delhi-ites, the non-planned "invisible city" areas are sources of affordable rental housing, as well as locations for thousands of small businesses and workshops. They are connected to the visible city through complex political and economic arrangements. This interdisciplinary workshop brings together scholars in urban planning, architecture and the social sciences to conduct preliminary investigations, through interviews, surveys and mapping to explore how these spaces work. This research is intended to open up questions and generate new concepts about urban space in the contemporary Indian city. When: Three weekends: July 19-21, July 27-28, August 3-4 10am-5pm each day Where: SPA Hostel Community Hall, Maharani Bagh Field Research Area: Taimoor Nagar Area, adjacent to SPA Hostel Participants: Students of architecture, planning and the social sciences Coordinators: Moulshri Joshi/Architect/SPA Kushanava Choudhury/Political Scientist/CSDS/University of Pennsylvania Durba Chattaraj/Anthropologist/ CSDS/University of Pennsylvania Speakers: Sunil Kumar/Engineer/Municipal Corporation of Delhi Poonam Prakash/Planner/SPA/HUDCO Chair for Housing Ashok Kumar/Planner/SPA Sanjay Kumar/Deputy Director/Lokniti/CSDS
