Workshop aids teachers to strive through building relationships John Walker January 22, 2015 The college of education held a workshop to improve work relationships among early career teachers in Collings Hall on Saturday. The morning session of the Skills for Early Career Teachers: Surviving the First Three Years, presented by the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education, was conducted by Julianna Kershen. The morning session primarily focused on teachers creating and maintaining positive interaction among students, parents and other colleagues. If people believe that their intelligence and their personality are malleable, then they will aspire to do better, Kershen said. Kershen cites a poor rapport with faculty and students as the primary reason why teachers drop out a few years into the teaching profession. She hopes workshop like this will provide a blueprint to not only get through the first couple of years in teaching, but to thrive in curating relationships that will seamlessly aid the transition into the field of education. We were given funds to create a series of workshops and to offer mentoring support through one-to-one or group relationship building with faculty, Kershen said. The session was broken into three topics, beginning with building professional relationships. The group transitioned into focus. Finally, the seminar ended with establishing rituals to promote effective and compassionate learning environment. Over 25 teachers from across the state were participants in the workshop. Members were active as they were treated to a variety of collaborative tasks from using index cards and markers as ice breakers to breaking down examples of case studies to each group. “The state of Oklahoma is interested in supporting early career teachers,” associate dean for professional education Teresa DeBacker said. Teresa DeBacker is the curator for each of the four workshops that will be held throughout the spring semester. Each workshop has a specific focus in facilitating instructors to maximize their productivity in the classroom. The Office of Educational Quality and Accountability provided the funding for the funding and DeBacker thanked the dean of the college of education Gregg Garn for the opportunity to use the facilities.
