World Cup? No. This is also BraSil. Cláudia da Silva Ferreira was shot during another operation by the military police in the neighborhood where she used to live. The police officers throw her into the van and take her to the hospital. On the way, the back door opens and Claúdias inert body is dragged throughout the busy streets of Rio de Janeiro, like a sack of potatoes, clinging from the van by a thread of her own clothing (the images were recorded by a bystander). She is only thrown back into the van over 800 feet later. A hard-working-class-mother-of-four-black-woman, Cláudia does not survive. Injured black bodies dont get in an ambulance; they are thrown in the bare back of police vans. Black bodies of honest, hard-working Brazilian citizens are shot in numerous day-to-day police operations against drug traffic. But who cares? Black bodies dont matter (except for show, samba, soccer, or service). They are casualties of war. The stories of other unimportant black bodies are linked to this one: Renisha McBride, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, and so many others all over the diaspora. President Dilma Rousseff ; Rio de Janeiro Mayor, Eduardo Paes; and Rio Governor Sérgio Cabral havent said a word about how the police conducted Cláudias rescue.
