World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14th, the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea that led to the discovery of insulin in 1922. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating threat of diabetes worldwide. The global diabetes community has worked together with local champions on the international Blue Monument Challenge to light iconic landmarks and buildings in blue to mark World Diabetes Day around the world, with more than 1000 monuments in 84 countries being lit blue for diabetes. The World Diabetes Day logo is the blue circle, the global symbol for diabetes which was developed as part of the Unite for Diabetes awareness campaign. In addition to the Pacific Science Center Arches, the Seattle Great Wheel, Pacific Medical Center Beacon Hill, CenturyLink Field and many other landmarks in the Seattle/Everett area will also be lit blue for November 14th. jdrf.org
