World Fisheries Day 2014; End overfishing! World Fisheries Day, celebrated annually on November 21, brings attention to over-fishing, habitat destruction and other threats to our aquatic food resources. A recent study by the United Nations found that two-thirds of the world’s fisheries have already collapsed or have been over-fished. The remaining third is also in a state of decline due to global warming and pollution. Click on the UNs video below on the consequences of overfishing. World Fisheries Day also helps to highlight the importance of the oceans to human life through public awareness and education activities held worldwide. Humans consume over 100 million tons of fish every year, which amounts to 25 percent of the world’s dietary protein. Globally, annual fisheries exports are valued at USD 90 billion and more than 43 million people are employed in the fisheries industry. The consequences of fully exploiting all fish stocks extend beyond the loss of a protein source and jobs but also to severe environmental damage and disruption of marine ecosystems. #sustainablefishing #WorldFisheriesDay #overfishing
