World Health Day 2014: Preventing vector-borne diseases More than half the world’s population is at risk from diseases such as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, schistosomiasis, and yellow fever, carried by mosquitoes, flies, ticks, water snails and other vectors. Every year, more than 1 billion people are infected and more than 1 million die from vector-borne diseases. On this World Health Day – 7 April – the World Health Organisation is highlighting the serious and increasing threat of vector-borne diseases, with the slogan “Small bite, big threat”. Going by this theme, we remember how the outbreak of a vector-borne disease played a significant role in the history of RCC. Back in 1899, a new building at Monsieur Street, initially meant to house the Royal College, had to be converted into a Civil Hospital (nowadays the Jetoo Hospital) following a plague outbreak in Port Louis; it was also decided to transfer the school to Curepipe, a temporary decision which however lasted till 1912.
