World Mystery No. 1 How were the massive stones used to ancient pyramids transported? Researchers from the University of Amsterdam may have found the answer to this question. The ancient Egyptians could have moved them across the desert by wetting the sand in front of a contraption built to pull heavy objects. This can be seen in a painting discovered in the tomb of Djehutihotep, where 172 men are hauling an immense statue using ropes attached to a sledge. At the front of the sledge, there is a man wetting the sand making it easier to move. The researchers did an experiment where they dragged sledges through the sand and found that pulling them through dry sand required more strength than pulling them through wet sand. ~Alexandria
