World News J&K on boilSix dead, Scores injured in BSF firingRamban, July 18, CNS: In a bid to suppress the voice of fasting protestors against the alleged descretion of Holy Quran at the hands of Boarder Security Forces (BSF), men in uniform killed at least six protestors in Gool Town of Ramban District on Thursday morning. The direct firing from the BSF personnel more than fifty people injured. Agitated protestors torched Army vehicle and ransacked the office of Deputy Commissioner Ramban. DiscretionRepor ts said that four BSF personnel soon after the night prayers forcibly entered into a seminary at Shaddi area of Gool Town and thrashed the religious teacher Qazi Shabir Ahmed without any reason. “These BSF personnel were drunk and they not only tore Holy Quran into pieces but also torched some of its pages,” one of the residents of Shaddi told CNS.“As the news about the discretion of Holy Quran spread in the area, people in hundreds came on roads that time, however the Tehsildar and police officers of the area pacified the protestors and encouraged them that they can protest early in the morning against the incident,” an injured at SMHS Hospital said.Reports said that thousands of people assembled at Shaddi Gool, and marched towards BSF camp. The protestors raised pro- Islamic and anti-BSF slogans. “Police was accompanying us. Deputy Commissioner and SP Ramban were also marching with us. No BSF personnel were in sight. As we reached near the BSF Camp, they indiscriminatel y fired upon us,” an eyewitness told CNS.Reports said that in an open violation of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) BSF personnel fired directly upon the protestors, killing at least six persons and leaving scores of protestors injured.The deceased have been identified as Lecturer Manzoor Ahmed Shan son of Abdur Rehman, Javid Ahmed Manhas son of Haji Abdur Satar, Farooq Ahmed Beigh son of Mohammad Abbas, Abdul Lateef Bakarwal son of Abdur Rashid, Mirza Shahbaz son of Mohammad Shafi Jaral all residents of Gool.Some of the injured were identified as Mohammad Amin, Mohammad Rafiq Zargar, Qamar-u-Din Najar, Abdul Rashid Mir, Nazir Ahmed Chandeel, Mohammad Iqbal Kutay, Nayeem Ahmed Kumar, Tariq Hussain, Irfan Ahmed Geeray, Mohammad Farid Geeray, Bashir Ahmed Geeray, Zubair Salam Wani, Master Masood and Abdul Rashid Bhat.Protestors alleged that policemen present on the spot were instructed by DC Ramban Sham Vinod Meena to resort to firing on protestors. Even after the deaths of six people and continuous firing by BSF personnel, protestors marched towards old DC office Ramban and ransacked it. Protestors smashed the window panes of Ambulance (JK06-1273) and tried to set it on fire.Agitated protestors set an Army wanton on fire and smashed few vehicles that were plying on the road. A police official told CNS that at least six persons were dead when BSF personnel fired upon protestors after they were trying to attack the camp. Soon after the incident high tension gripped Gool, Ramban, Chanderkote and Batote towns in the district.Protes ters blocked the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway at some places. Thousands of people came on roads at different places on Srinagar Jammu highway and raised pro- freedom slogans. People offered prayers on roads and did not allow traffic to ply on the roads.Clashes were reported from different parts of South Kashmir as well as in Srinagar against the killing of six people in Ramban District. Bar Association staged a protest against the incident and took out a march in Lal Chowk. Srinagar city observed a complete shutdown after the news of killings and discretion of Holy Quran spread in the City.Stone pelting incidents were reported from Kulgam, Dooru, Verinag, Gojwara, Nowhata and Maisuma. At Maisuma one policeman was critically injured after he was hit by a stone on his head. He was identified as Selection Grade Abdul Aziz (322) from 3rd IRP Battalion.Minis ter of state for home Sajad Kitchloo and top police officials including Director General of Police Ashok Prasad visited Ramban and took stock of the situation. Both Central and State Government has ordered a probe into the firing incident. Shinde said any use of excessive force or irresponsible action will be dealt with strictly.Meanwh ileTraffic police officials said for precautionary measures all Jammu bound vehicles have been stopped at Qazigund. “Traffic will be allowed to ply only when the situation becomes normal,” a Traffic official said. Separatist leaders while condemning the action have called for a shut down. Syed Ali Shah Geelani has asked people to observe complete shutdown for three days from Friday while Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik has called for Lal Chowk Chalo on Friday. Almost all the separatist leaders have been either lodged into jails or put under house arrest. (CNS)
