World War II. It was 70 years ago today in a private boys school in London and the British headquarters for the operation, General Dwight Eisenhower and his staff outlined the plans for the invasion and liberation of France at Normandy on D-Day for Britains King George and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The British maintained a non-smoking headquarters until King George arrived - and lit up. Then Eisenhower resumed his eighty cigarette a day habit, Churchill joined in with a cigar and continued on his 10 stogies per day (Cuban Romeo y Julietas and Camachos if his custom brand was not handy) and every other general including US First Army general, Omar Bradley, fired up their Camels and Lucky Strikes. Planning and presenting plans for invasions in war time is a stressful business. For the infantrymen that have to execute those plans and invasions, far more so. In three weeks, one of the more ironic recollections of D-Day survivors were not only the combat casualties, but the endless of cartons and packs of cigarettes that washed up on the 20 miles beaches after the invasion.
