#WorldCup #Sleep #Deprivation It seems more and more that modern life leaves little time for sleep. Now, with China in the grips of World Cup fever, more people than ever are burning the midnight oil. The World Cup games in Brazil are around 12 hours behind Beijing, and millions of Chinese football fans are staying up until the early hours to watch their favorite teams. An increasing number of doctors and health professionals are cautioning against sacrificing too much rest. Already in China, marathon World Cup viewing sessions have led to several deaths and at least one miscarriage. China’s growing difficulty catching some shut-eye was documented last March during ceremonies for World Sleep Day. According to the China Sleep Research Center, four percent of Chinese suffer from sleep disorders, with the capital ranking among the country’s highest. Obstructive Sleep Apnea, one of the country’s most common sleep disorders, can lead to general fatigue and, if left untreated, can increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.
