Would CNN have interrupted programming if this guy died instead of James Gandolfini?...but first a note on the importance of what James Gandolfini helped make possible: ALLEN COULTER (director): "Sopranos gave the lie to the notions that you had to explain everything, that you always had to have a star in the lead, that everybody had to be ultimately likable, that there had to be so-called closure, that there was a psychological lesson to be learned, that there was a moral at the center that you should carry away from the show, that people should be pretty, that people should be svelte. The networks had essentially thrown in the towel on good drama. It’s like changing the direction of an ocean liner. But Sopranos did it. They changed the game." ------And who was it that created the Sopranos, who had the wisdom and guts to cast James Gandolfini? David Chase, born David DeCesare, who among being responsible for all of the things mentioned above, also wrote his own panic attacks, life-long depression, and problems with his overbearing mother into the character of Tony Soprano. Together, Chase, Gandolfini and all of the other actors and designers created something that affects everything that comes after them.
