GATE is now, for the first time in Bangladesh, going run an International English Language Teaching Qualification recognized and accredited by the world-biggest Affiliation Authority, City & Guilds and the University of Manchester for their MA in TESOL Programme. ACE (Access Certificate in English) - What is ACE? The ACE forms a part of the International English Qualifications suite. ACE is designed to develop teachers´ language awareness and the knowledge of ELT methodology, teaching and classroom skills, as well as their confidence and ability in communicating in English. It enables candidates to gain a language teaching qualification with an emphasis on communicative language teaching methods. Who has designed this programme? ACE has been jointly developed with the world-renowned Department of Language and Literary Studies in Education at the University of Manchester UK for City & Guilds, UK. All City & Guilds qualifications are designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge that are sought after by employers worldwide. They are acknowledged as a global benchmark of excellence. Wherever you are in the world, you know that your City & Guilds certificate is a passport to success! The two well-established trainers and authors, Jeremy Harmer and Dr Diane Philips endorsed the project. ACE was piloted in different countries and launched in June 2000. GATE is going to start conducting classes from September 2013 and has received a tremendous response from English teachers of Sylhet Region. Who is ACE targeted at? ACE is aimed at: -Newcomers to the profession who want/need an initial teaching qualification -Practising English language teachers who want/need an international recognition for their skills and experience -Teachers of other subjects who want to move into English language teaching ACE is a TEFL qualification aimed at aspirant teachers who want to enter the EFL/ESL market as an English teacher, either locally or abroad and at those wanting to travel the world, teaching English to foreign language students. What is the course content? The course fully covers the two constituent programmes of ACE qualification. It follows the syllabus of the Foundation of English Language Teaching and Supervised Teaching Practice and is validated by City & Guilds. This qualification is subject to supervision and moderation by an External Verifier. The syllabus, assessment criteria and programme documentation are fixed. 1. Foundations of ELT: The participants are required to cover 11 units of the basics of ELT accounting for the minimum of 100 effort hours including face-to-face sessions, on-line tutorials, personal tutorials, a study of the support materials, work on written assignments. 2. Supervised Teaching Practice: The teaching practice includes teaching, observations, feedback sessions, writing a teaching journal, lesson planning and compiling a portfolio which would be assessed by the external verifier. Examination: The multiple choice examination is conducted and assessed by City & Guilds and makes the Part 1 of the certification. The second part is the teaching practice and the lessons are assessed by the internal and external verifiers. Students will have to do both parts to get the full qualification. Unique features of ACE: Delivered and assessed locally at City & Guilds approved Examination Centres. Applies a practical and pragmatic approach to teaching, as underpinning theoretical knowledge is supported by demonstration of practical skills Flexible course delivery, with a total course length of 150 learning hours Interactive feedback-based in-house assessment externally monitored by City & Guilds through external verifiers The written exam is available in on-line as well as in paper-based versions Focus on the communicative teaching method in line with modern day professional requirements Structure of the Qualification: Ace consists of two parts: 1. Theory part, based on Jeremy Harmers books Foundations of English Language Teaching (FELT) and How To Teach English (100 learning hours) The theory part aims to develop an initial understanding of the practical features of English language teaching, particularly: • ideas on what makes a good teacher and a good learner • an introduction to language systems and how they can be taught • how to teach receptive and productive skills • effective classroom management • suggested teaching models applied to lesson planning • resources available to teachers and learners • appropriate teaching techniques. 1. Practical part, called Supervised Teaching Practice (STP) (50 learning hours) Supervised Teaching Practice develops the practical skills of English language teaching. It focuses on: • classroom management and procedures • techniques and methods • personal qualities • assessment and monitoring • use of language. Available Levels: The qualification is available at Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework of England, Wales and Northern Ireland Assessment: Underpinning theoretical knowledge of FELT units: assessment is through a multiple-choice written examination that available either on-line all the year round or through a paper-based examination paper 4 times a year. Both are assessed in London. Supervised Teaching Practice: It will be assessed by local Assessors at the centre and appointed by the centre, externally verified by City & Guilds. The assessment for Supervised Teaching Practice consists of two sections: i) teaching practice (4 lessons with a minimum duration of 40 minutes) ii) portfolio (lesson plans, observation sheets, teaching journals, self-evaluation, et al) Support Materials: Centres approved for ACE are supported with a CD master copy of the 11 FELT units by Jeremy Harmer, as well as online availability of the FELT units upon request What is the duration? The duration is 150 hours for both theory and practical. The course is conducted on Fridays at GATE Centre from 10.00-4.00.It takes about 6 months to complete the programme.
