Would you recommend Contrave for weight loss? Most people seem - TopicsExpress

Would you recommend Contrave for weight loss? Most people seem to think that Contrave is a new drug- it is not. Contrave has been around for many years but never got the approval from the FDA because of concern for adverse effects. Contrave is a combination of bupropion and naltrexone. Bupropion is a very old antidepressant agent. The drug does initially cause some weight loss, but this is not sustained and within a few months, the weight is regained. Now the manufacturer has combined it with naltrexone to help maintain the weight loss. It is claimed that this combination helps take away the cravings for food. Contrave is recommended for people with a BMI of > 30 or BMI of 27 and have one comorbid condition like high blood pressure or diabetes. Now to the real facts-Contrave is no more effective than Qsymia or another weight loss agent. It does not work if you just sit on the couch and expect to lose weight. For Contrave to work, you must do some type of exercise and eat less. The amount of weight loss varies from 1-3 pounds a month or about 20-30 pounds a year. Do remember, doctors who participate in clinical trials sponsored by manufacturers are often paid enormous sums of money-so it is inevitable that some data are hyped and some are fudged. The cost of Contrave is about $7 per pill or about $210 for month. This cost is not covered by most insurance plans. The weight loss with Contrave is not immediate nor is it predictable. With no guarantee that the drug will work, my advice to all fatties is the same- walk more and eat less. This is free and devoid of complications.
