Wouldn’t it be so wonderful to be able to have a day alone with ‘The Bible Greats?’ To be granted an entire day to pick Daniel’s brain, to ask Paul questions, to see what else Moses would say, and to hear from Joseph or David. It is, in fact, one of the things that I personally look forward to about heaven. I can’t wait to meet those people that we read about. Jesus, who is infinitely higher and better than any other ‘great’ offers to speak to us daily yet often we are too busy and encumbered with this life to set aside ample time to spend with Him through prayer and the study of His Word. Do you know what Daniel, Moses, Abraham, Jonah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Mary, Deborah, Esther, Paul, John, Peter, Martha, and the rest would tell you if you did have a day, here, with them? They would tell you to dig into God’s Word. How can I say that? How can I know that? Because they all agree with God, and God sets His Word above His own name- “for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name” (Ps. 138:2). The Apostle Peter explained that he had seen the glorified Christ with his very own eyes. Did Peter start bragging or even center on the details of that experience? No.. it wasn’t his focus in life. God doesn’t show Himself as He used to back then, now that the scriptures are completed, we have the written Word from God and He is not adding to it. But Peter directed us to something more solid than any experience that we might ever face or fancy in this life. “You mean to tell me that there is something more solid and reliable than a supernatural experience?” YES. “Goodness! …what was it?” “What could be more concrete than circumstantial evidence and personal experience?!!” The Holy Spirit inspired Peter to tell us… “And we have something MORE SURE, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2Pet. 1:19-21 emphasis mine). Do you remember the rich man that went to hell, and wanted Abraham to send Lazarus back to earth from the dead to warn his brothers, so as not to have them choose hell? He thought for sure that something as powerful and miraculous as a man coming back from the dead would convince his brothers to repent and avoid hell. But what was the reply to his request? “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; (OT scriptures. i.e. the Bible.) let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead” (Lk. 16:29-31 parenthesis mine.) Let’s not underestimate the riches and wisdom that we have available to us in God’s Word!!!
