Wow, Facebook flagged and removed this (bit.ly/1nEAwGm) photo of my 11-month old baby daughter claiming that it doesnt follow the Facebook Community Standards regarding nudity. Really, Facebook? Shes wearing a diaper. And Ive seen a *lot worse* on Facebook. This highlights one of the biggest reasons why Im inclined to stop publishing anything anywhere except on my own website, which I control. Sure, it was probably an automated routine that flagged the photo, but thats beyond the point. The point is that anything I post on Facebook (or Twitter, or Google+ or anywhere else that isnt my own website) is no longer mine. I give up ownership. I create something (like this post) and then hand it off to a for-profit corporation and tell them to do as they wish. I have no freedom here. If you write and publish a lot of stuff that only exists on a social network, please reconsider what youre doing. A hundred years from now if your grandchildren want to read your thoughts, theres a good chance that everything you posted on Facebook will be gone. Thats a whole part of your life, sucked away into a corporate machine. (Im copying this post into my notes to re-publish later on raamdev.)
